On many ships and drilling rigs, a gas detection system is used for safety monitoring. Typical hazards include: the release of toxic gases or vapours, a shortage or excess of oxygen, the release of combustible gases and vapours. So long as these hazards are detected in time, counter-measures can be initiated by the gas detection system to protect people, workplaces and the ship or rig.
