Many substances are harmful because they are inhaled into the airway in the form of gases, vapours or solid & liquid particles. Many types of work in the shipping industry therefore require special protection to minimize risks to health and the exposure of personnel to such hazardous substances.

Typical tasks include cleaning of oil tankers; decontamination and disposal of harmful chemicals; work such as grinding, drilling, cutting during construction; cleaning, de-rusting and painting of rooms; pest control; loading and unloading; oil and gas extraction in the offshore industry, and many more applications.
